Trip to famous cake house

A few days ago, my friend from my university time is in town. So dining out is the only option to update each other.  We haven’t met each other for about a year since she is following her husband oversea after getting married.

Before we heading back, we stop by at this famous cake house in the city. They are specialized in kek lapis (layered cake). Believe it or not the business is so good, they open from early in the morning until midnight. According to the owner, their cakes are so famous among tourists and local peoples.

See…the cakes are so colorful and artistic and the taste is even very good. Yummy…believe me if you take one, it will lead to second piece.

I don’t know, but i really like the flowers at the entrance.

Oh ya…will post the kek lapis recipe later…

My Version of Potato Wedges

My other half is number one fan of potato wedges. Usually when we bought it, 3/4 of it will end up in his stomach.

Recently, he did request me to make it for him. My first thought? Is it do able? Who ever in my life circle ever make the potato wedges for them self? The answer is big NO. I never thought it before. It’s easier just to purchase it right? Why you have to make your life difficult for an easy job? And then, something strike my mind. There is always GOOGLE for every problem. Silly me. Of course it’s do able.  So…there, I search for the info. Easy peasy…as easy as A B C, i said to him. Potato wedges will be served for you sir…hehehe. Ok i’m kidding here. I’m still phobia to use my oven since the incident of my whole cake was burnt…

First step: Wash and peel the potatoes

Second step: Cut the potato

Third step: In a bowl, pour in just enough oil (olive oil or vegetable oil will do) to cover each wedge. Alternatively, shake them in a plastic bag to coat them in the oil. Then add in salt and pepper. You also can add other herb as what what ever you like.

Fourth step: Place the potatoes in a baking tray.

Fifth step: Bake in a pre-heated oven until both side are golden brown. Make sure you check whether it’s soft on the inside. As for me, to avoid the burnt case twice, i regularly check it like every ten minutes.

When it’s ready, serve with chili sauce or any sauce that your prefer. As for me i serve it with mayonnaise.

My homemade doughnuts

doughnuts

Does these doughnuts make you drool right now?

Because I am.

All this while I’m tempted to make my self doughnuts. I have never successfully made it before.

These are flash back of doughnuts time from my first attempt;

There I was. In my kitchen. In front of me is a plate full of ‘not so complete form of doughnut’. Some are oval in shape. Some are rounded with ‘edgy’ surface. Some were …I don’t have a word to describe the shape. Despite that, after fried it I push my self to dust it with icing sugar with the hope it will taste like doughnuts.

But, NOOO….it wasn’t taste like any.

What can be wrong that mine never taste as good as from the bakery? Theirs are fluffy, soft and…taste like doughnut.

Where as mine, from the first attempt were hard like a rock.

Can’t had a moment to enjoy it like in any doughnuts ads in television; the first chew is like having the most fluffy pastry stuff and enjoy every minute in your life when it was in your mouth.

That was apposite of mine. I bet if I serve it to granny, 100% she can’t chew it. May be she will thought I purposely serve him the rock in my fish tank.

But, hey… I deserved a second chance. Thus,  here is my second attempt to make homemade doughnuts.

doughnutI read the recipe extra careful this time with the hope nothing went wrong.

Fast forward, after left the dough for about 1 hour and shape it into doughnut shape I fried it.

This time, with crossing finger I hope everything will turn OK as what I expect.

Guess what????

You think everything will taste like the one in the shop? Of course no…hehehe

But this time it’s…I can say 80% better than the first attempt.

Too bad I didn’t take final photo….

I get it now, you can’t become a pro over night…Practice make perfect!
